Minnesota fishing guide Joe Scegura gives his latest Alexandria fishing report on May 20, 2024.
Alexandria Fishing Report: 5-20-2024
The fishing has been fantastic on most lakes in the area.
The focus this past month has been on bluegills and crappies, but now anglers are beginning to shift towards larger gamefish like walleyes, northern pike, and bass.
Crappies: Alexandria Fishing Report
Crappies can be caught on almost all of the lakes in the Alexandria area. Most fish can be caught between one and four feet of water. A number of fish are spawning while others are siting just outside the spawning areas. Target shallow bays, channels, docks, and areas with wood. Right now is a great time to target crappies from shore. Crappies can be caught on small jigs paired with plastics or hair under a bobber.
Bluegills: Alexandria Minnesota Fishing Report
Bluegills can be found in the same areas as the crappies. Shallow bays, lily pad fields, and reeds are all holding schools of bluegills. Focus on depths in less than five feet of water. Small jigs paired with plastics or a piece of nightcrawler have been the best bait.

Walleyes: Alexandria Fishing Report
Walleyes are biting in the Alexandria area. Focus on depths between six and twenty feet of water. During lowlight conditions you’ll want to fish shallower and during the day you’ll want to focus on depths closer to twenty feet of water.
Target shallow flats and main lake points. Jigs and minnows are producing most of our fish.
Bass: Alexandria Fishing Report
Both largemouth and smallmouth bass can be caught in less than ten feet of water. Look for largemouth bass in shallow bays and along the emerging weedlines.
Smallmouth bass can be found on shallow rock piles and rocky shorelines.
Plastics, swimbaits, jerkbaits, and small hair jigs are working for both largemouth and smallmouth bass.
