A braid-to-fluorocarbon leader setup is one of the most versatile ways to fish a flipping rod. It gives you the power and sensitivity of braid while keeping the bait more natural and less visible in clear water.
For day-to-day flipping, Seth’s go-to setup is simple: a 7-foot medium-heavy rod, 30-pound braid, and a 20-pound fluorocarbon leader. This combination gives him enough strength for cover, but still keeps the setup light, accurate, and easy to fish.
For connection knots, the FG knot is a great choice when strength matters most, especially in high-impact situations. However, with shorter leaders, a modified Albright knot can be faster and easier to tie while still getting the job done.
Straight braid still has a place. When fishing heavier weights, thick grass, or punching mats, braid is the better option. But for most flipping situations, a fluorocarbon leader adds stealth and flexibility.
