Minnesota guide Jason Freed of Leisure Outdoor Adventures gives his latest Lake Vermilion fishing report on May 21st, 2024.
Lake Vermilion Fishing Report: 5-21-24
We’ve got lots happening right now up on Lake Vermilion. Anglers are catching smallmouth bass, walleyes, northern pike, and crappies. We are getting closer to June and the bite is going to get really good up on Lake Vermilion in the coming weeks.
Walleyes: Lake Vermilion Fishing Report
The walleye bite has been getting better up on Lake Vermilion. Walleyes are still fairly spread out, but some anglers are catching fish along the first break in four to sixteen feet of water. Look for fish on rock reefs and hard to soft bottom transitional areas.
Walleyes can be caught on a number of different presentations. Slip bobbers paired with leeches, lindy rigging minnows, crankbaits, jigs paired with minnows or jigs paired with plastics are all working well.

Northern Pike: Lake Vermilion Fishing
The northern pike bite has continued to be good up on Lake Vermilion. Anglers can expect to catch numbers of quality northern pike in the shallow bays and in the emerging weed beds. The river is also producing some nice northern pike. Spinnerbaits, shallow jerkbaits, and swimbaits have been the best way to catch them. Brighter colors like chartreuse, firetiger, and gold-flash seem to be working the best.
Crappies: Lake Vermilion Fishing Report
Right now crappies can be caught in the shallow bays on Lake Vermilion. Schools of crappies are moving into the shallows into their spawning areas. As the water temperatures continue to rise the crappie spawn should be in full swing. Most crappies are being caught between four and eight feet of water. Small hair jigs and jigs tipped with plastics under a float have been working great for these Lake Vermilion crappies.
