Avid angler Caleb Wistad of Hookedupwi gives his latest Buzz Bite Report for the Boundary Waters Canoe area on June 27th, 2023.
Boundary Waters Canoe Area: 6-27-2023
The fishing was really good this past week in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and on surrounding lakes off the Gunflint trail. Anglers should expect to catch lots of fish if they are headed up that way this week or over the 4th.
The smallmouth bass fishing was incredible this past week. We caught tons of fish on Ned rigs in shallow water. Look for rocky shorelines and focus on depths between three and four feet of water. Make sure to bring a good pair of polarized glasses, because most of the fish we caught we saw swimming the shallows.
Northern pike can be caught anywhere you can find weeds. The bite was fantastic and you could catch them on any bait you wanted to throw. Spoons, bucktails, crankbaits, and swimbaits all worked great.
Lindy rigs or slip bobbers with leeches or crawlers is still the ticket for walleyes. Target areas along the break between shallow and deep water. As the water temps warm up those fish will push out onto the summer structure.
Lake trout can be caught between twenty and thirty feet of water. Two or three ounce snap weights paired with small spoons worked well.
There are several lakes in the area that provide opportunities for stocked trout. In previous years a slip bobber and nightcrawler had worked well, but this past week they seemed to be keying in on small minnow profile stickbaits and crankbaits.
The fishing should stay good for awhile up in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Good luck to anyone making the trip up. Have fun and get hooked up!
