During our trip, it didn’t take long to connect with quality fish. Using a simple presentation, a VMC Moon Eye jig tipped with a salted minnow, we quickly hooked into a beautiful Manitoba walleye measuring close to 19–20 inches.
What stood out immediately was the fish’s incredible condition. Manitoba walleyes are known for their thick bodies and vibrant colors, and this fish was no exception. Compared to fish from many southern fisheries, the walleyes here often display darker backs and brighter patterns.
One interesting pattern we noticed was that the fish were rejecting an active jig presentation at times. Instead, they seemed to prefer a deadstick setup with a salted minnow hanging motionless. Adjusting to what the fish wanted made all the difference.
That ability to adapt is often key when fishing northern waters.
