Northern Wisconsin: 4-30-2023

We are finally seeing open water here in Northern Wisconsin. A majority of our smaller lakes have opened up and due to the big winds and rain a lot of our bigger lakes are almost ice free as well.

Look for crappies and bluegills near their shallow spawning areas. Depending on the lake the panfish may be positioned along the outside weed edge in six to fifteen feet of water. On some of the shallow, dark bottomed bays that heat up fast some panfish have began to push up into less than five feet of water.

Small jigs under floats will work great. Hair jigs, plastics, and livebait will all produce plenty of bluegills, crappies, and perch.

Except to run into a few largemouth bass and northern pike mixed in with the panfish.

A few anglers have been hitting the south shore of Lake Superior and are catching a mixed bag of lake trout, coho salmon, and brown trout.

Spoons and shallow running stickbaits have been the ticket. Greens, pinks, purples, and firetiger has been the better producing colors.

The opener is right around the corner. Good luck to all the anglers fishing this week and good luck on Wisconsin’s fishing opener.
