Minnesota guide Brian Brosdahl of Bro’s Guide Service gives his latest Lake Winnie fishing report on May 1st, 2024.
Lake Winnie Fishing Report: 5-1-2024
The crappies are biting well up in Northern Minnesota. We’ve been fishing Lake Winnibigoshish and the surrounding area lakes.
We’ve got one more week until the Minnesota walleye opener and right now is a great time to get your gear ready and prepared.
Crappies: Lake Winnie Fishing Report
Water temperatures are around fifty degrees in the medium sized lakes. The bigger lakes are still several degrees colder.
Cass and Winnie and the surrounding smaller lakes have a great crappie bite happening on them.
I’ve been using the new Tungsten Northland Crappie King Fly and Tungsten Flat Fry jig and have had a ton of success on both. Hair jigs have really been working well. The best colors have been pink and white.
Numbers of crappies can be found in eight to ten feet of water. A lot of times the fish have been suspended off the bottom. Utilize side imaging to find them.
As the water temperatures continue to rise, expect those fish to move into the shallows. Bays, docks, and fallen trees are all likely spots for crappies.

Perch: Lake Winnie Fishing Report
The perch have already spawned on the smaller lakes. They are just beginning to spawn on the bigger lakes like Leech, Cass, and Winnie.
Jumbo perch can be found in less than five feet of water on shallow flats.
Small jigs paired with plastics or crappie minnows will catch plenty of perch.
Bluegills: Lake Winnie Fishing Report
Anglers can find bluegills in the same bays and weed beds that they are finding crappies. Most of the bluegills have been relatively close to the bottom.
Target weed beds and flats in eight to eleven feet of water.
Similar to the crappies, anglers can expect those bluegills to push into the shallows as the water temperatures increase a few degrees.
