Minnesota guide Matt Johnson of Matt Johnson Outdoors gives his latest Lake Minnetonka fishing report on May 16th, 2024.
Lake Minnetonka Fishing Report: 5-16-2024
The water temperatures are on the rise and most lakes in the Metro area have a surface temperature around sixty-five degrees.
Overall the fishing was good. Anglers can expect to run into plenty of largemouth bass, northern pike, panfish and some walleyes.
Crappies: Metro Area Lakes
The crappies are in the middle of their spawn. Some are on beds and some have already finished up spawning.
Do your best to practice selective harvest and let the fish go that are guarding their eggs on their nests.
Main lake milfoil weed beds are holding the most fish, but some crappies can also be found in coontail beds. The channels and shallow bays also have some fish in them.
Small jigs paired with hair or plastics continue to be the ticket. The Mister Twister Sassy Stingum has been our best plastic by far.
Largemouth Bass: Lake Minnetonka Fishing Report
Largemouth bass can be caught in the shallow bays and on shallow main lake weed beds. Focus on depths between three and ten feet of water. Some largemouth bass are starting to bed up.
Plastics, chatterbaits, jerkbaits, squarebill crankbaits and jigs are all producing bites.
Anglers can expect to run into plenty of northern pike and walleyes while bass fishing.

Bluegills: Lake Minnetonka Fishing Report
Bluegills can be caught on all of the Metro area lakes. Bluegills are transitioning into the shallows right now. Look for bluegills in shallow bays and channels. Most of the bluegills can be found in depths between two and eight feet of water.
Small jigs paired with a float continue to be the ticket for these bluegills. We’ve trigged the most bites when we’ve slowed down our presentation for the bluegills.
