Minnesota guide Toby Kvalevog of Leisure Outdoor Adventures gives his latest Leech Lake fishing report on May 15th, 2024.
Leech Lake Fishing Report: 5-15-2024
This past weekend was the Minnesota fishing opener and the bite was good overall. Anglers caught lots of walleyes, northern pike, panfish, and bass all weekend.
Walleyes: Leech Lake Fishing Report
Walleyes seemed to be biting all over the lake. Fish were caught on Stony Point, Little Stony Point, the south end of Bear Island, Sucker Bay, Portage Bay and the Walker Narrows.
Most anglers were having the best success in six to twelve feet of water. Look for wind blown points and shallow sandy flats. Those areas were holding the most fish.
A jig and minnow was the best presentation this past opener weekend. A 1/8th-ounce and 1/16th-ounce jigs worked the best. Pair them with either a spottail shiner or fathead minnow and you’ll be good to go.
Crappies: Leech Lake
The crappies have pushed shallow and are biting well. Anglers can expect to find crappies in shallow bays and reed beds in six feet of water or less.
Both hair jigs and jigs paired with plastics are working. Pink, white, and chartreuse have been the best colors for crappies.

Bluegills: Leech Lake Fishing Report
Anglers can find bluegills in the shallow bays and weed beds. Most of the bluegills have been relatively close to the bottom. Focus on depths between one and seven feet of water.
Small jigs in a 1/32-ounce size paired with hair or a piece of nightcrawler have been working well.
Perch: Leech Lake Fishing Report
There have been a few anglers out fishing for perch and they are having some success in the Walker narrows and Bervik narrows.
Small jigs paired with plastics or crappie minnows will produce plenty of perch.
