Minnesota guide Chuck Hasse of Leisure Outdoor Adventures gives his latest Leech Lake fishing report on May 2nd, 2024.
Leech Lake Fishing Report: 5-2-2024
Water temperatures on the main basin are in the mid-forties, while some of the shallow back bays are beginning to reach the fifty degree mark.
The walleyes have finished up spawning and it’s shaping up to be a great opener in a few days.
Perch: Leech Lake Fishing Report
There have been a few anglers out fishing for perch and they are having some success in the Walker narrows and Bervik narrows.
Look for areas that may have some current and places where the water temperatures are a few degrees warmer than the main lake.
The perch are just finishing up spawning and can be found in big schools.
Small jigs paired with plastics or crappie minnows will produce plenty of perch.
Crappies
The crappie bite on Leech Lake has been a little tough. Most of the fish are still in that in-between zone. Focus on areas just outside their spawning structure and flats. A few crappies can be caught in the shallow, muddy bays near emerging reed beds.
Most fish are being caught on small jigs under floats. Both hair jigs and jigs paired with plastics are working. Pink, white, and chartreuse have been the best colors for crappies.
As the water temperatures continue to increase anglers can expect the crappie bite to really pick up.
Bluegills: Leech Lake Fishing Report
Anglers can find bluegills in the shallow bays and weed beds that they are finding crappies. Most of the bluegills have been relatively close to the bottom, although a few schools have been just below the surface.
Similar to the crappies, anglers can expect those bluegills to push into the shallows as the water temperatures increase a few degrees.
