Lake Minnetonka Fishing Report: 4-29-2024

Minnesota guide Matt Johnson of Matt Johnson Outdoors gives his latest Lake Minnetonka fishing report on April 29th, 2024.

Lake Minnetonka Fishing Report: 4-29-2024

We had a cold and windy week in the Metro Area, but that didn’t stop the crappies from biting. Overall the fishing was fantastic.

Water temperatures were in the mid-fifties.

Anglers can expect the bite to only get better as the water temperatures continue to increase.

Crappies: Lake Minnetonka Fishing Report

The best bite for crappies can be found in the main lake weed beds between five and eight feet of water.

Milfoil weed beds are holding the most fish, but some crappies can also be found in coontail beds.

The schools we have been finding are big. Most times we’ve been able to catch thirty or forty fish in one school.

Small jigs paired with hair or plastics continue to be the ticket. The Mister Twister Sassy Stingum has been our best plastic by far.

Bluegills: Lake Minnetonka Fishing Report

We are running into a decent amount of bluegills lately.

They can be caught in the same areas as the crappies however it seems like the majority of the bluegills have been slightly deeper than the crappies.

Most of the bluegills can still be found in depths between six and twelve feet of water. As the water temperatures increase expect those bluegills to move shallower.

Focus on main lake weed edges and flats that have access to shallow water.

Small jigs paired with a float continue to be the ticket for these bluegills. We’ve trigged the most bites when we’ve slowed down our presentation for the bluegills.

Wisconsin Fishing Opener

This coming Saturday is the Wisconsin fishing opener. Anglers can expect bass, northern pike, and walleyes to be shallow. Most fish should be in twelve feet of water or less.

Shallow weedy bays, windy blown points, and creek mouths are all going to be likely spots for gamefish. Good luck to those fishing the Wisconsin fishing opener.
