Captain Jarrid Houston of Houston’s Guide Service gives his latest Duluth fishing report on April 17th, 2024.
Duluth Fishing Report: 4-17-2024
Things are just starting to get going here in the Duluth and Superior area. There are several good opportunities for anglers right now.
Most lakes have water temperatures in the upper forties.
Panfish: Duluth Fishing Report
Overall the panfish bite has been tough in the Duluth area. It’s easy to locate them, but it’s been difficult to get them to bite.
Panfish can be found in shallow bays near their spawning areas.
They haven’t made the push into extremely shallow water yet, but as the water temperatures continue to rise you can expect to find crappies and bluegills in less than ten feet of water.
Anglers can expect the bite to improve as soon as the water temperatures increase a few degrees.
Hair jigs, jigs and plastics, and jigs paired with crappie minnows will produce fish as soon as the bite gets going.
You can cast and retrieve your presentation or work it under a float. Both methods should produce crappies and bluegills.

Lake Superior and Tributaries: Duluth Fishing Report
Steelhead can be caught on the Lake Superior tributaries both on the South shore and North shore.
The South shore tributaries are at good levels and there are plenty of steelhead in the rivers. The North shore rivers are just getting started and will only get better over the the next week.
Spawn sacs, flies, beads, and yarn are all catching fish.
On Lake Superior anglers can expect to catch lots of salmon and trout trolling spoons and stickbaits.
Bright colors have been working best. Pink, orange, UV green, and chrome have been the ticket.
Smelt are just beginning to show up at the mouths of the river. I’d expect smelt to start showing up in big numbers within the next ten days.
