Hayward Fishing Report: 2-23-2024
We have no snow and with these warm temperatures we are starting to loose ice in northern Wisconsin.
Most of the lakes still have around ten inches of ice, but some of the shorelines are beginning to get soft. Please use caution if you plan on heading out onto the ice.
Overall the fishing has been great.
Walleyes: Hayward Fishing Report
Walleyes are biting well early in the morning and late in the evening.
Lots of walleyes are still shallow and being caught in less than fifteen feet of water. Target main lake points, humps and weed beds.
Walleyes are biting a number of different presentations, but it seems most of the fish are being caught on spoons tipped with minnow heads or on set lines rigged with smaller shiners and sucker minnows.
Crappies: Hayward Fishing Report
Crappies can be found in shallow bays that are located near deep basins.
Look for these fish in late ice areas. Crappies can be caught on small spoons or tungsten jigs tipped with a plastics.
Bluegills
Schools of bluegills can be found in the shallow weed beds mixed amongst the crappies. They have been biting all day long. Focus on depths less than ten feet of water.
Small jigs paired with a wax worm or euro larvae continue to produce the most bites. Small plastics have also been working.
Northern Pike
Northern pike can be caught in the weeds and weed edges. Focus on weed beds in less than fifteen feet of water.
Large sucker minnows or shiners on set lines have been taking a bunch of nice fish.
Trout
The inland trout season is open here in northern Wisconsin and anglers have had some success catching fish on small spinners as well as fly fishing. With the nice, warm weather we’ve had trout fishing is a great option.
