Michigan walleye, bass, and trout fishing has been strong the past week. Water temperatures are on the rise and the fish are continuing to progress towards their summertime locations.
We have the most recent fishing report here for you, courtesy of Captain Ben Wolfe. He’s going to cover down on the fly fishing panfish bite, the spawning largemouth and smallmouth bass opportunities available right now, the walleyes on Saginaw Bay and the Detroit River, and the lake trout of Lake Michigan.
“Hi, I’m Captain Ben Wolfe with Sport Fish Michigan and I have this week’s AnglingBuzz report for you from the state of Michigan.
“It’s mid-June now and we have some awesome opportunities all across the state. For those fly anglers that are looking for something fun, we have panfish on the beds. Those are a lot of fun on little poppers. In evenings and late afternoons, we have a great bug hatch starting and that will only get better and better as the water warms and the month progresses.
“Post spawn smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. We have lots of great opportunities all across the state here. Soft plastic jerkbaits and senkos are great options right now, as well as topwaters early in the morning. For those fishing bodies of water that have gobies, it’s really important to get those male bass back on the beds as quickly as possible to defend the nest and ensure great fishing for years to come. We want those fish to be able to spawn successfully.
“Michigan walleye fishing continues to be great on Saginaw Bay and the Detroit River. The lake trout fishing, both trolling and jigging, is really good right now on a lot of the waters of Lake Michigan. Those fish are in 40 to 70 feet depending on the water temperatures, which fluctuate with the wind. Either way, we have great opportunities for lake trout.
