Minnesota fishing guide Matt Johnson of Matt Johnson Outdoors gives his latest Lake Minnetonka fishing report on August 7th, 2024.
Lake Minnetonka Fishing Report: 8-7-24
The Blackfish Classic was this past week and we saw some big weights coming out of Lake Minnetonka. Water temperatures are in the upper seventies and low eighties and overall the bite has been great on Lake Minnetonka and the surrounding Metro area lakes.
Lake Minnetonka Fishing Report: Bass
With the warm water temperatures most of the bigger bass can be found out deep. Look for largemouth bass along the main lake deep weedlines. Main lake weedy humps are also holding plenty of fish. Most of our fish came between eight and fifteen feet of water just like last week. The best bite has been during the first few hours in the morning, however fish can be caught all throughout the day.
A jig worm continues to produce numbers of bass all week. The ned rig was also super effective and caught a ton of fish. We used a 1/5-ounce jig head in chartrusese color. The heavier jig head will help you get done quicker. The best colors plastics were green pumpkin, blue, or black. Swimbaits also produced some nice fish throughout the week.

Lake Minnetonka Fishing Report: Panfish
While we didn’t chase panfish this week I’d expect them to continue with the similar patterns as last week. The bluegill and crappie will still be schooled up. Look for bluegills and crappies in the shallow weeds and weed beds. Cabbage weed beds were best, but the key will be to find fish with your electronics. The best depths have been between six and ten feet of water. Small jigs under bobbers will work great. Natural color, minnow looking plastics will be the ticket.
Lake Minnetonka Fishing Report: Northern Pike
The northern pike can be found along the weed line in the same places as the bass. Faster moving baits have been the ticket. Swim jigs, crankbaits, and swimbaits have been effective. If you are just looking for some good action with a hard fighting fish northern pike are great species to chase this time of year.
