The water temperatures are hot on Leech Lake. Most areas of the lake are in the high seventies and some of the shallow bays have reached the low eighties. Overall the fishing has been good on Leech Lake. Walleyes, smallmouth bass and largemouth bass are all biting well.

Leech Lake Fishing Report: Walleye

The walleye bite has definitely picked up on Leech Lake. Walleyes can be found on rocks in both the main lake and in Walker Bay. Right now walleyes can be caught a number of different presentations. Jigs and leeches, jigs and crawlers, slip bobbers, and Jigging Raps are working.

Look for walleyes in fourteen to twenty-two feet of water on rock piles, rock bars other underwater structure like points. A few fish can be found along the weed lines. The best bite has been early in the morning and late in the evening during primetime hours; however can be caught all throughout the day.

Leech Lake Fishing Report: Bass

Largemouth bass can be caught in the shallow, weedy bays in Leech Lake. Fish in Sucker Bay, Portage Bay, and behind Bear Island for the best bites. Most anglers are punching weed beds with heavy Texas rigs setups, flippin’ baits or heavy jigs. There is also a frog bite happening in the bulrushes.

Smallmouth bass can be caught in fourteen to eighteen feet of water along the rock edges. Look for big boulders. If you find big boulders you’ll find a number of smallmouth bass. Ned rigs and tubes have been working best. The best colors have been rusty orange, charcoal, and chartreuse colors. It seems like most of the smallmouth bass are feeding on crayfish. Fish your baits along the bottom.
