Captain Jarrid Houston of Houston’s Guide Service gives his latest Buzz Bite Report for Duluth and the surrounding area on May 17th, 2023.
Duluth: 5-17-2023
Overall the fishing is good and the water temps are on the rise in the Duluth, Twin Ports, and Superior area.
Anglers can expect to catch walleyes dragging jigs paired with minnows. Our best jig has been the Northland Fishing Tackle Tungsten jig in the color bubblegum. Do your best to get away from the cowards for the best action.
Crappies can be found off the weed edges and in the shallow bays. These fish are just beginning to get ready for the spawn. You can catch these fish with small jigs paired with plastics or crappie minnows. Hair jigs have been working as well.
Northern pike and bass can also be found up shallow in less than ten feet of water. Target these fish with small swimbaits, jerkbaits, chatter baits, and plastics.
There is a pretty good trolling bitting happening right now on Lake Superior. The smelt have been running and trout and salmon can be caught on stickbaits or spoons just outside of the river mouths.
That’s what’s happening in the Duluth, Superior and Twin Ports area. As water temps continue to rise the fishing should only get better for panfish and bass. Good luck to anyone fishing this week or over the weekend!
