Fishing in Grand Rapids Buzz Bite Report 1-17-2023
It was the Minnesota trout opener over the weekend and anglers were hitting the trout lakes in the Grand Rapids area. The best bite was early in the morning until about 9 am. Splake, rainbows, and brown trout could be caught on small tungsten jigs like the VMC Bullfly jig or small tungsten spoons.
The Rapala Ultra light Rippin Rap also produced a few of the nicer trout. Most fish were caught along the shoreline in less than ten feet of water.
Most fish have transitioned into their mid-winter patterns. Look for schools of crappies in the mud basins in twenty five to thirty feet of water. A Clam Snow drop XL paired with a Clam Maki in the color motor oil produced a majority of the fish.
Walleyes, ciscos, jumbo perch and smallmouth bass can be caught on main lake humps with rocky bottoms in eighteen to twenty-four feet of water. A 1/8 ounce spoon paired with a minnow head will work for all of those species.
The best bite for walleyes has been late in the afternoon into the evening. Make sure to be ready to go at your spots during primetime, because the bite window is short.
I Fish Pros with a minnow set about a foot off the bottom has been good option for northern pike, walleye, and jumbo perch.
