Northern Minnesota Buzz Bite Report 12-10-2021

As usual, that first ice bite on Red Lake has been really good this year. Some days have been better that other, but overall most anglers are catching a good amount of nice sized walleyes anywhere from that sixteen to twenty two inch range.

I accessed Red lake at the south end and measured ten inches of ice and walked out about half a mile. We ended up catching over twenty nice sized walleyes.

We caught fish jigging and on set lines / deadsticks.

Our best bait was a 1/8th ounce Bro Bug Spoon by Northland in a Red glow color tipped with a minnow head.

The ice thickness varies in rest of Northern Minnesota. Some smaller lakes you will find up to ten inches and others will only have a couple of inches.

You have to use extreme caution when venturing out. Bring ice picks, spud bar, a rope and a throwable.

In some of the lakes that have good ice some nice panfish can be caught along the weed edges in six to twelve feet of water. Small jigs paired with a wax worm or plastic will get it done.

You can also expect to catch northern pike with set lines and sucker minnows along the weedlines.

Good luck to those angler fishing in Northern Minnesota and be safe!
