This week, we’ve been talking all about catching fish in rivers, so we thought we’d pick out a handful of river fishing lures and other products that will help you do just that!
Northland Current Cutter Jig
First things first, let’s bust out the jigs. The Northland Current Cutter Jig is designed specifically for fishing in current. It has unique ergonomically head shape, and it also has a bait keeper which helps when you’re snapping your jig more erratically – this will keep your minnows, your plastics and your worms on the jig.
Clam Drop TG Tungsten Jig
Another one of our favorite river fishing lures is the Clam Drop TG Tungsten Jig. Tungsten is extremely dense compared to lead. What that means is you have more weight in a smaller package. This is a great option whether you’re fishing livebait or plastics.
Northland Impulse Swim’N Grub
Now what are you going to put on these jigs? A lot of people like to use livebait, and there’s a good reason for that: livebait catches fish. But sometimes plastics work just as good. The Northland Impulse Swim’N Grub is a great option. If you’re fishing in a clear lake, you might want a natural color, but bright orange, chartreuse and green can be excellent for fishing in dirtier rivers.
Blue Fox Vibrax Inline Spinner
Bright colors work really well on river fishing lures. This Blue Fox Vibrax Inline Spinner has pink, blue and some flashy silver to call fish in from a distance – and sometimes they just can’t resist the blades!
Original Floating Rapala
There’s a lot of different ways to fish the Original Floating Rapala. You can troll it behind the boat, or you can cast it out. You can fish it in the middle of the water column or you can fish it up near the surface like a wake bait. You can also rig it up to a three-way rig and fish it down in deep holes. Regardless, the fish cannot resist it’s enticing minnow profile.
Bait Caddy
We talked a little bit about using plastics, but obviously livebait is a great tool, too. One of the biggest keys to catching fish with livebait is keeping the bait healthy and lively. If you have some bait that you’d like to keep in your livewell separated from your catch, you can pop it in the Bait Caddy throw it in the livewell, and you should be good to go! Additionally, you can put a rope on it and toss it off the side of the boat.
Rapala Folding Fillet Board with Clamp
One tool that’s always nice to have in the boat is a cutting board. Often times in river fishing situations, you might need to cut up some bait for catfish, and what’s nice about the Rapala Folding Fillet Board is it’s easy to store and ready to go at a moments notice.
Plano Series B Tackle Box
Next up, let’s cover down on tackle storage. The Plano Series B Tackle Box is a great option for river fishing for a couple reasons. First off, it’s waterproof, so if it starts to rain on you, it will keep you tackle dry. Also, this isn’t a massive box. You can actually fit quite a bit of gear inside the pouch, but it’s not going to take up a bunch of room if you happen to hop in one of your buddies’ boats. Additionally, this is a good size if you’re fishing from shore, which is another common way to fish rivers.

One nice thing about fishing in rivers, especially small rivers, is that you can hide from the wind, which can really help with boat control. That said, if it’s a hot day, that can be a little bit of a double edged sword because it can get really hot if there’s no wind, especially if you’re not able to escape into the shade. This is a penetrating oil and lubricant solution, and there’s a lot of different situations where you might want to use this. It’s really helpful when you have a net that’s sticking or maybe your boat seat pedestal is stuck. Maybe your pliers are rusty and they could use a little lubricating. The list goes on and on. There’s a lot of reason why you might need lubricant and the penetrating oil in Deep Creep can actually help with a lot of the rust issues you might have on some of your gear, as well.
