Minnesota fishing guide Billy Rosner of Wild Country Guide Service gives his latest Lake Vermilion fishing report on September 26th, 2024.
Lake Vermilion Fishing Report: 9-26-24
The late summer bite is in full swing on Lake Vermilion. Water temperatures are between sixty-two and sixty-six degrees. As the water temperature continue to cool the fishing should only get better. Right now is a great time to plan a trip up to Lake Vermilion because the fishing is good and the lake isn’t receiving a ton of fishing pressure.

Lake Vermilion Fishing Report: Walleye
Walleyes can be caught a number of different ways and has really picked up in the past week. The lead core bite is on fire right now in most of the deep water basins on Lake Vermilion. Number five Rapala Shad Raps have been the ticket. Berkley Flicker Shads are also producing a few fish. The depths have varied depending on what basin you are fishing in, but walleyes can pretty much be found anywhere between fifteen and thirty feet of water.
If you don’t want to troll lead core you can catch walleyes with livebait rigs paired with minnows on main lake reefs, breaks, and humps. Focus on depths between eighteen and thirty feet of water. Minnows have been key and the minnow bite is only going to pick up as we transition further into fall.
Anglers can also expect to run into few walleyes and some jumbo perch along the weed lines in ten to twelve feet of water. Swimbaits or VMC Moontail hair jigs have been the best presentation. If the fish are positioned off of the weed line a Rapala Jigging Rap is another good option.

Lake Vermilion Fishing Report: Northern Pike
Northern pike can be caught by anglers fishing spoons, swimbaits, inline spinners, and spinnerbaits. Focus on the weed beds and weed lines. A majority of the northern pike we’ve been catching have been in the weeds. In the coming weeks as the weeds begin to die off, those northern pike are really going to concentrate in the remaining weed beds that are standing upright and still green. Keep that in mind if you want to target northern pike in the fall.
