Leech Lake Fishing Report: 12-27-24

The ice is really starting to form on our lakes in Northern Minnesota. A lot of places have nine to twelve inches of ice, however, some of those deeper lakes have much less.

Places like Walker Bay and other deep lakes have much less ice and caution is advised. Always use a spud bar and constantly check the ice as you go. Pack a throw rope and wear a float suit. Remember to practice ice safety.

Overall the fishing has been fantastic. Anglers are catching lots of walleyes, northern pike, jumbo perch, and panfish.

Leech Lake Fishing Report: Walleye

The walleye fishing has been good. Anglers are catching numbers of walleyes on Leech, Winnie, and Cass Lake. One of the best baits has been the Northland Tungsten Buck-Shot in a red/gold glow. That color in particular has been great on Red Lake and Lake of the Woods. On Leech Lake the gold/perch colored Tungsten Spoon has worked best. On Winnie wonderbread has worked best.

Key depths for walleyes have been between fourteen and twenty feet of water. A lot of the walleyes on Leech, Winnie and Cass have been cruising the edges of the weed lines. Shoreline points have been the best spots for walleyes. Most of the fish are located in their late fall locations. As we progress further into winter those fish will start to move out onto those main lake structures.

Leech Lake Fishing Reports: Panfish

The panfish bite has been excellent on most of the lakes in the area. Crappies and bluegills can be caught on small spoons and jigs tipped with wax worms. Focus on flats and on the edges of basins in sixteen to eighteen feet of water.
