Cass Lake Fishing Report: 9-25-2024

Cass Lake, Leech Lake, and Lake Winnibigoshish all have good bites happening on them right now. Anglers can also find solid bites on the smaller lakes in the area. The fall walleye bite hasn’t happened quite yet the water temperatures are still a bit too warm, but we are starting to see some fall transitions. Water temperatures are in the upper sixties on most lakes in the area.

Cass Lake Fishing Report: Walleye

Walleyes can be found on shallow structure on Cass, Leech, and Winnie. Some key depths have been between five and thirteen feet of water. On the windy days target areas closer to five feet. On the calm, sunny days target depths closer to thirteen feet of water. Most of the slimy algae has worked its way off the bottom so anglers can fish jigs without worrying about moss/algae building up on their bait.

A jig tipped with a rainbow minnow or jig and plastic has worked great. We’ve had a ton of success on the Northland Smeltinator Underpin jig head paired with a Northland Fishing Tackle Eye-Candy Grub in the smoke shad color. You can swim it straight back or pop it off the bottom. If we get a warm stretch of weather slip bobbers paired with nightcrawlers are another great way to trigger bites. As the water temperature continue to cool down over the next couple of weeks anglers can expect the fall walleye bite to really pick up.

Cass Lake Fishing Report: Jumbo Perch

Jumbo perch are biting everywhere. Cass, Leech, and Winnie have great jumbo perch bites happening right now. Look for them on the shallower flats near the schools of walleyes. A jig and plastic or jig and minnow has been great for the big perch.

Cass Lake Fishing Report: Crappies

The crappies and bluegills have been biting well on most area lakes. On some lakes they are holding tight along the weed edge and on others they have slide out towards the mid-depth basins. Anglers can expect those fish to push into the mid-depth basins as the water temperatures continue to cool. For right now anglers should focus on depths between ten and twenty feet of water. Some schools of crappies can still be found along the weed lines. Look for standing, green weed beds. Small jigs have worked great. Pair them with plastics, hair, or livebait.
