Minnesota fishing guide Matt Johnson of Matt Johnson Outdoors gives his latest Lake Minnetonka fishing report on September 9th, 2024.

Lake Minnetonka Fishing Report: 9-9-2024

Water temperatures are beginning to drop and most lakes in the area are in the low seventies. It’s one of the best times of the year to fish. Everything seems to be biting well and it will only get better as we continue our transition into fall.

Lake Minnetonka Fishing Report: Bass

The fishing pressure has gone down and the bass are biting great. Anglers can expect to catch numbers of largemouth bass, but you have to stay on the move to put fish in the boat. Right now bass can be found as shallow as four feet and as deep as twenty-four feet of water. Look for fish in and around the weed beds and weed lines. Some fish can be found on docks as well. As the water temperatures continue to decrease anglers can expect a majority of the bass to move shallower. Right now you can catch largemouth bass a ton of different ways. Chatterbaits, swimbaits, jigs, flippin’ baits and punch rigs have all produce bites this week; however we had are best success power fishing.

Lake Minnetonka Fishing Report: Walleye

The walleye bite has definitely improved and they can be caught on swimbaits, chatterbaits, ned rigs, jig worms, jigs paired with minnows, and jigs paired with leeches. The fish are really starting to school up on hard bottom spots like sand flats and rock piles. We are catching some fish throughout the day, but the best walleye bite will be during the primetime hours early in the morning and late in the evening. Anglers can expect to walleye bite to continue to get better in the coming weeks.

Lake Minnetonka Fishing Report: Northern Pike

We are still catching plenty of northern pike along the weed lines and on some of the deepwater humps on Lake Minnetonka and the surrounding Metro area lakes. Chatterbaits, swim jigs, spinnerbaits, and swimbaits have all produce numbers of northern pike. Northern pike are great species to target if you are looking for some good action. In the coming weeks I’d expect some of the bigger northern pike to move shallow as the water temperatures continue to drop.
