Alexandria Minnesota Fishing Report: 7-15-24
The bite for a variety of species remains good as we enter mid-summer. With the hot weather on the horizon this may change some of the fish patterns but overall the fishing should continue to be good.
Alexandria Minnesota Fishing Report: Walleye
The walleye bite has still been going strong and anglers can expect to catch numbers of nice fish. Some days the fish are packed tight on the bottom and the slow moving tactics work well. Other days the fish are more spread out and faster presentations are working better.
Most walleyes are still in fourteen to eighteen feet of water. Look for fish along the deeper weeds and weed line. They haven’t moved out deeper into the main basin like we usually see in midsummer, however with warm temps on the horizon we should see a shift in the next few weeks.
Slow Tactics:
Bobbers: slip bobbers with leeches or crawler chunks have worked very well when fish are sitting tight on the bottom. Let your presentation sit above them. Give them time and they will come up and eat it.
Jigs: Pitching jigs on schools of fish is another great tactic. A jig with a piece of crawler or leech has been the ticket. Brown, blue and pink have been some good colored heads in a 1/8-ounce size.
Lindy Rigs: Slow dragging lindy rigs with a floating jig head to get above the thick bottom weeds is catching lots of fish. Especially when you can quite pin point schools it allows you to slowly cover water
Fast Tactics:
Cranks: Rapala Shad Raps or Northland Rumble Shads trolled at 1.2 mph can get fish to eat on the outside edge of the weed lines. It has been a great search bait to find fish and cover water.
Spinner Rigs: Crawlers harnesses trolled on a bottom bouncer going around 1-mph has been catching fish. Another great way to cover water and pick up bites.
Alexandria Minnesota Fishing Report: Bass
Bass fishing has been great these past weeks with the hot weather. It looks like it should only continue to get better. Fish are in their mid-summer patterns and are sitting in deeper weed beds. Fish weeds from ten to eighteen feet of water. Carolina rigs, heavy jigs, drop shots, and ned rigs have all been working well. Anglers are also having some success pitching dock. Look for deep, heavily covered docks.
Alexandria Minnesota Fishing Report: Panfish
Sunfish are up shallow and off of their beds. The bluegills have been biting well. Looking for reeds and weeds in five to eight feet of water. Hair jigs, plastics, nightcrawlers or leeches are working great for bluegills. Crappies can be found along the weed edge in ten to twelve feet of water. Most of the fish are sitting about halfway down in the water column. Slip bobbers with crappie minnows has been really effective, but angles are also catching a lot of crappies pitching jigs and plastics.
