Minnesota guide Matt Johnson gives his latest Minneapolis fishing report on February 27th, 2024.
Minneapolis Fishing Report: 2-27-24
The walleye, northern pike, and bass season is now closed in Minnesota and it looks like the ice fishing in the Metro area is also just about done.
Ice conditions are very sketchy and are getting worse by the day. There are several lakes I wouldn’t even go on, and for the lakes that still have some safe ice it’s foot travel only.
I would not recommend it, but if you do plan on ice fishing in the Metro area please be safe, bring your ice picks, a throw rope, and check as you go.
There is some decent ice about two hours north of the metro area, but I’d still recommend calling the resorts ahead of time, because the conditions are changing quickly.
Crappies: Minneapolis Fishing Report
When we were able to get out the crappies were biting great.
We’ve been finding a lot of crappies on the edge of the deep basins. Focus on depths between thirteen and twenty feet of water.
Some fish have also began to move towards their spring areas.
Spoons and jigs paired with plastics continue to be the best presentations.
We have been using slightly heavier jigs and spoons than we normally would, because it allows us to get our baits down faster.

Bluegills : Minneapolis Fishing Report
Bluegills can be caught on the edge of the basins and in the shallow weed beds. Look for those basin fish in fifteen to twenty feet of water.
Target weed beds in four to twelve feet of water.
Small jigs paired with plastics have worked great. Wax worms and euro larvae have also produced a ton of fish.
If you do plan on targeting the fish in the shallow weed beds, you need to do your best to make as little noise as possible because the fish are skittish.
