Northern Michigan: 7-14-2023

We’ve got several good bites happening right now in Northern Michigan.

Lake trout and king salmon are biting well on Lake Michigan. Trolling flashers with spoons or flies has been the best method for king salmon. Greens, purples, pinks and chrome have all been good colors.

Look for the thermocline and work your baits in that depth zone. Right now we’ve been finding it somewhere between thirty and fifty feet down.

While trolling you do have a shot at a steelhead, coho salmon, and lake trout.

For those anglers that want to jig, you can get on a pretty good vertical jigging bite for lake trout out by the islands. Jigging spoons, blade baits, and hair jigs will all work.

Smallmouth bass are biting well on our the inland lakes. Focus on deep water structure like reefs, rock piles, and saddle systems.

Tubes and drop-shots seem to be the best method for catching smallmouth bass.

Walleyes can be caught trolling on our inland lakes. Durning low light periods anglers are catching walleyes on main lake structures like humps and reefs jigging and rigging.

All these bites should remain consistent for at least a week or so. Get out here and catch some fish.

Good luck to all the anglers fishing in Northern Michigan!
