Grand Rapids, Minnesota Buzz Bite Report 3-29-2022

The panfish bite is really heating up on a lot of lakes in the Grand Rapids area. Bluegills and crappies have moved out from the basins and can be found along the shallow weed flats anywhere from three to thirteen feet of water on the smaller lakes.

On the larger lakes, look along the edge of the basins anywhere from ten to twenty feet of water. Search areas near spawning grounds or near areas that tend to hold fish shortly after ice out.

This time of year you can lean on larger plastics and bigger profile sized baits to trigger bites. These panfish are aggressive and looking to eat.

Some good bait options that have been working well have been the Rapala Slab Rap in a size 4 or the Clam Dropkick jig paired with a white or red colored Scudi XL.

We received a couple inches of snow mid-week last week and I wouldn’t advise any vehicle travel on the lakes. There are a decent amount of slush pockets out there and the ice is beginning  to soften up. Track machines are best, but some 4wheelers have been getting around as well.

Good luck to any anglers fishing late ice in the Grand Rapids area!
