Here’s the latest Leech Lake late summer walleye fishing report from local guide Jason Freed.
The bite has been hot, especially during the low-light periods, but in his report, Jason talks about how he’s catching walleyes during the “slower” mid-day bite windows.
Let’s hand it off to Jason:
“Hey everybody, Jason Freed here with Leisure Outdoor Adventures with your Leech Lake AnglingBuzz report for this week. It’s late July here in late summer, which means warm water temperatures. We’re looking at mid-to-upper 70’s at times, which really means a couple of different things:
“Number one, take advantage of the major feeding periods early in the morning and late in the evening. When you are fishing during the day, you need to think about reaction styles of baits. Find those long break lines, those expansive flats on the west side of the lake for example, that’s the time to start trolling crankbaits. #5 and #7 Shad Raps, Flicker Shads, things like that. Cover ground at 2.5 or 2.8 miles per hour, looking for fish. Once you find a pod of fish, you can always slow things down. Lindy rigs are still going to be catching fish. Slip bobbers are still going to be catching fish.
“The name of the game right now in late summer on Leech Lake is reaction style baits. Crankbaits, Jigging Raps, Rippin’ Raps, find a way to get the reaction bait in front of them and you’re going to catch a few more walleyes.
