Fishing guide Mack Peters of Slab Seeker Fishing gives us his latest Lake Superior Trout Report on October 16th, 2024.
Lake Superior Trout Report: 10-16-24
Fall is here and the salmon and trout are running the rivers on Lake Superior. We’ve had an interesting fall so far. The water levels are extremely low, however the fish are cooperating fairly well with the conditions. With the colder weather we’ve had this past week the water temperatures are dropping. There has been a decent amount of fish so far and the number should only increase as we progress further into fall.
Lake Superior Trout Report: Salmon
We’ve had a good amount of salmon show up in the rivers so far. It seems like the salmon are running big this year on Lake Superior, especially the king salmon. Both coho and king salmon can be caught on crankbaits, spoons, twitch jigs, beads, flies, and eggs. Anglers should note that the salmon run is winding down and going forward it will primarily be steelhead and brown trout in the rivers.

Lake Superior Trout Report: Brown Trout and Steelhead
Anglers can expect to run into both brown trout and steelhead on the Lake Superior tributaries. Even with the extremely low water levels there are good numbers of fish in the rivers. Beads, spawn sacs, flies, and nightcrawlers are all working. They can be fished under floats or on bottom bouncing rigs. Most fly anglers are having success on larger nymphs and stonefly patterns, but streamers can also be very effective. Most fish have been caught on the edge of deeper holes, but plenty of fish are sitting in the faster runs.
Good luck to all the anglers fishing the Lake Superior tributaries! The fishing is only going to get better as we get later into fall!
