Captain Jarrid Houston from Houston’s Guide Service gives us his latest fishing report for the Duluth Area on July 12th, 2024.
Duluth Area Fishing Report: 7-12-2024
Summer is here and the fish have transitioned into their mid-summer patterns on most bodies of water in the Duluth area. The fishing has been great and anglers are having lots of success with lake trout and salmon on Lake Superior.
Duluth Area Fishing Report: Inland Lakes

Anglers can find walleye on reefs and sunken islands on the main lake. Northland Puppet Minnows have produced a number of bites. The best colors have been gold and wonderbread. Work them aggressively to trigger reaction bites out of fish.
Some fish can also be caught on wind blown shorelines. Pitch paddle tails along the drop-offs. Most of those fish are sitting in fifteen to eighteen feet of water. The fish are slightly shallower early in the morning and late in the evening. Don’t pass up the night bite especially on those cold, clear sky nights.
Anglers can also expect to run into plenty of bass and northern pike along the weed lines. Throw spinnerbaits or chatterbaits in shallower weeds. You can also fish docks and deeper weeds lines with jigs and senkos.
Duluth Area Fishing Report: St. Louis Estuary
The walleye bite has been pretty good on the St. Louis River. We are catching lots of fish trolling. Anglers can find active fish in five to eight feet of water. We’ve trigger the most bites slow trolling at 0.8 to 1 mph. Crankbaits and spinners are working. The best crankbaits have been the Northland Rumble Shad in perch, gold and silver colors.
Walleyes can also be caught while jigging. Tip a jig with a worm, minnow or leech. Plenty of perch and pike being caught along with the walleye.
Duluth Area Fishing Report: Panfish

Bluegills are down spawning and anglers can find lots of fish in the shallower vegetation in the four to eight feet of water. They can be caught on crawler chunks and smaller hair jigs. Crappies are also being caught off of the weedlines in eight to twelve feet of water using crappie minnows and small plastics.
Duluth Area Fishing Report: Lake Superior
Fishing has been pretty good for walleyes and coho salmon out on the big lake. The laker bite has remained good as well and there are plenty of fish to be caught. A few king salmon are also being caught in the mix and the size has been nice. Anglers having best success on flasher fly combos for salmon and lake trout. Sitck baits and crankbaits have been the best for walleyes. Focus on the stained water coming out of the St. Louis River for walleyes. Trout and salmon are being caught a bit farther out into the clearer water up North.
