Hayward Wisconsin Fishing Report: 6-27-24
The Hayward Wisconsin area has been fishing very well despite the bad weather that’s been rolling through. Walleyes, smallmouth bass, panfish, and more have all been fishing well. Most of our lakes water temperatures have stayed cooler due to the cold fronts we’ve had. Water temps are ranging from 65 and 70 degrees depending on the lake.
Hayward Wisconsin: Smallmouth Bass
Bass are using summer structure right now and can be found on rock piles, docks, cribs, or wood. The weather has varied a lot so make sure to fish around and try a variety of spots and tactics to see what’s working best.
Baits:
Ned rigs are always a great mid-summer bait. We’ve had a lot of success using the colors black, green pumpkin, and rusty orange. Pitch Ned rigs at docks or off of rocky structure this time of year. Neko rigs are working well for fish that are on deeper structure, especially on those cooler days when fish are more finicky. Natural colors like clear, white, and green pumpkin are some great options.
A few bass can also be caught on suspending jerkbaits. White, perch, or purple/blue color is working best. On the warmer sunny days we are starting to see bass hitting top water baits. When the water temperatures get into the seventies that’ll topwater bite will only get better. Throw a Skitter Pop or prop bait to produce explosive strikes. White or green are always some good confidence colors when fishing on top.
Hayward Wisconsin Fishing Report: Walleyes
Walleyes have been relating to weeds and weed lines that have emerged. Most of the fish we are finding have been between fifteen and eighteen feet of water on the clear water lakes in the area. On stained lakes look for walleyes in eight to twelve feet of water.
We’ve had a lot of success fishing the weed edges with a slip bobber and leech. It’s been our best presentation by far. Some fish can also be caught on smaller plastics. A three inch paddletail on a jig head has been very effective through the weed beds.
Hayward Wisconsin Fishing Report: Panfish
Crappies are setup on weed edges in eight to twelve feet of water. Overall the bite has been good. Pitch a small two inch swimbait or cast slip bobbers paired with livebait. A few big bluegills can be caught in the mix. Some larger perch can be caught mixed in with the walleyes depending the lake.
