Leech Lake: 4-19-2023

The ice season is drawing to an end here up in Northern Minnesota and on Leech Lake. On some of the larger bodies of water we still have between ten and fifteen inches of ice, but we are losing it by they day. It is foot travel only and please use extreme caution if you do plan on venturing out.

On the smaller bodies of water the ice has detached from the shorelines and it won’t be long before a lot of those smaller lakes area completely ice free.

Area that have current are also ice free.

Once the ice is completely off there should be a really good panfish bite happening as those fish begin to push shallow in anticipation of spawn. Perch, crappies and bluegills will all be shallow. Target the shorelines with the warmest water and look for hard structure like wood, docks, and cattails.

Small jigs under a float will be the ticket.

Good luck and stay safe to any anglers out on the last bit of ice. Remember the Minnesota fishing opener is only a few weeks away!
