Chequamegon Bay: 2-27-2023

The inner island ice is still good from Red Cliff to Basswood island, but anything past that is not safe. Stay away from the South channel and ferry channel to Madeline island.

The ice is never 100% safe, so be extremely careful and check as you go.

Anglers are getting a good mix of whitefish and lake trout near Red Cliff and Basswood island. Target depths between thirty and sixty feet of water.

From Houghton Point down to Ashland there is about twenty inches of ice across the Bay.

Anglers are getting a mixed bag of Splake, whitefish, lake trout, browns, perch and Eelpout. Most fish are being caught between thirty and fifty feet of water.

Spoons tipped with minnow heads have been the best jigging presentation.  Set-lines and I Fish Pros rigged with shiners are also producing a number of bites.

The perch bite has been best using set lines with fatheads and shiners. Stay mobile and flexible to give yourself the best odds of getting on fish.

If you’re willing to get out onto Chequamegon Bay and get after it, there’s definitely opportunities to get on some fish right now for the last week of the gamefish season. Stay safe, be smart, and have fun out there!
