Advanced Walleye Jigging

Brian Brosdahl describes how adding a barrel swivel and fluorocarbon leader, and using shorter rods in windy conditions, advanced walleye jigging.

When it comes to walleye jigging, having the right equipment is essential. In this article, we’ll discuss the importance of using a shorter fishing pole and a small reel in windy conditions, as well as the benefits of using a swivel and fluorocarbon leader.

The Benefits of a Shorter Fishing Pole and Small Reel

In tournaments, using a shorter fishing pole and a small reel can be beneficial in windy conditions. I like to put a little swivel on my line most of the time in tournaments whether it’s a bass tournament walleye tournament.

Using a shorter fishing pole and a small reel can help to reduce the amount of line that is exposed to the wind, which can help to reduce the risk of tangles and snags.

Using a Swivel and Fluorocarbon

I like to do a uni-knot or blood knot to attach the fluorocarbon. I have braids on every rod in the summer. I use a little tiny swivel and just a couple feet to two and a half feet of the line —  just enough so that your line behaves like braids tend to wrap around jigs and tangle whether using jigs or if you throw in Puppet Minnow jig and wraps whatever you’re throwing. Do I like to put a little fluorocarbon leader, which is much stiffer. Using a swivel and fluorocarbon leader can help to keep your line from tangling and wrapping around jigs. Fluorocarbon is also stiffer than other types of line, which helps it to lie straight and behave better when jigging.

Conclusion

When it comes to walleye jigging, having the right equipment is essential. Using a shorter fishing pole and a small reel in windy conditions, as well as a swivel and fluorocarbon leader, can help to reduce the risk of tangles and snags, and help your line to behave better when jigging.
