The spring Lake Vermilion bite is in full swing. The crappies are pushing up as water temperatures continue to rise and the walleyes have been snapping. Here’s the latest fishing report from local guide and exceptional angler Billy Rosner of Wild Country Guide Service:

“The bite is on up here on Lake Vermilion. The resorts are open and the guides have the green light to go, so that’s all good news. We have had warmer weather that has kicked up the crappie bite in the afternoons. Get into those south facing, soft bottom bays. The crappies are on the move, so you should have some good luck there.

“The walleye bite has been all over the place. We’re catching fish anywhere from three feet all the way out to 35 feet. In the shallow 3-12 foot range, slip bobbers are working, plastics, small jigs, small rainbows have been productive as well.

“Lindy Rigs are working well, too. I like going with a 3/8oz slip sinker. Again, the depths on the Lindy Rigs are all over the place anywhere from 12 to 35 feet.

“With this recent warm weather, some of the bigger females are really starting to get going. Things are really shaping up to be another great year up here on Lake Vermilion.”

By all accounts (including Billy’s), it sounds like the walleye bite has been excellent, which is quite typical for Lake Vermilion spring walleye fishing. They catch some seriously impressive crappies this time of year, as Billy alluded to. If the timing is right, you should strongly consider giving them a few hours during peak periods next time you head up to Lake Vermilion
