Mille Lacs Lake (MN) Fishing Report – Blake Tollefson

by

The Mille Lacs walleye bite continues. It sure is amazing how a lake with “no walleyes” in it, keeps
producing so many quality fish.

The fish on the Big Pond are transitioning into their summer patterns. Mud flats are quickly turning into the place to be. The large majority of folks are rigging, jigging, and slip bobber fishing on the edges of the flats. However, we have found success pulling spinners and crawler harnesses farther up on the flats.

Six to seven foot snells, with a No. 4 Colorado blade, rigged up on two ounce bottom bouncers have been turning a lot of fish.

This type of fishing allows us to quickly cover water and weed out unproductive areas. If you aren’t marking fish, and catching them consistently it’s time to find a new spot. Look for areas with defining features (points, inside turns, or humps).

Covering depths of 23 – 26 feet at 0.8 – 1.2 MPH has produced both quality and quantity.
Personal preference has caused me to shy away from two hook harnesses and towards Slow Death/Super Death style hooks. That rolling action entices a lot of bites.

If you find some time to spend on the lake, be sure to get away from the crowds. A friendly reminder that Mille Lacs is currently catch-and-release only for walleyes.
Rod of choice: Elk River Custom Rod Rods 7 FT ER1 Bottom Bouncer. This rod is specifically designed for trolling bottom bouncers. Extremely sensitive, moderate action, and perfectly balanced. Let the rod load up and start reeling.
