Alexandria Minnesota Fishing Report: 7-1-2024

The Alexandria Area has had a lot of stormy weather this past week and looks to continue that way. With all these fronts the fishing has been good but patterns have changed back and forth depending on the day. It’s still been one of the best times of the year to catch walleye, bass, panfish and more.

Walleyes: Alexandria Minnesota Fishing Report:

If you are fishing in prefrontal conditions we’ve been seeing walleyes two to three feet off the bottom and more aggressive. Look for those fish between sixteen and twenty-two feet of water. This has been the best time to fish for walleyes and you can use aggressive presentations.

If you are fishing in postfrontal conditions the bite has been slightly different. A majority of the walleyes have been tight to the bottom. A lot of times they’re so tight to the bottom they aren’t showing up on any sort of graphs, and you have to trust they are still there. With them being more sluggish you have to force feed them with much slower presentation.

Look for walleyes on main lake structure like reefs, humps, points, and saddle systems. A number of fish can also be found on the outside edge of the developing weed line.

Baits:

Right now walleyes can be caught on a number of different livebait options. Leeches, crawlers, shiners, and fathead minnows all are producing fish. Lindy Rigs, slip bobbers, and jigs are all working.

Remember to use heavier weights on those postfrontal fish and try to maintain as much bottom contact as you possibly can. Slow trolling heavy bottom bouncer rigs when not marking fish is another great option. Downsizing your presentation is another good change up to do when trying to feed the finicky post-front fish.

Bass: Alexandria Minnesota Fishing Report

Bass can be found along the deep weed line in ten to twelve feet of water. Overall the bass fishing has been awesome and we are seeing a lot of big bass lately. We’ve had a ton of success using weighted soft plastics. Senkos, jigs and craws, Texas rigs, and shaky heads have all been working well.

Green pumpkin, blue, black, and brown with chartreuse tip have been some hot colors. With warmer temps we will start to see bass transition to docks and thick matted shallow weeds. Throwing frogs on the weeds and pitching docks will be something that heats up in the next few weeks.

Panfish: Alexandria Minnesota Fishing Report

Sunfish are up shallow off of their beds. The bluegills have been biting well. Looking for reeds and weeds in 5-8 feet of water. Hair jigs, plastics, nightcrawlers or leeches are working great for bluegills.

Crappies can be found along the weed edge in ten to twelve feet of water. Most of the fish are sitting about halfway down in the water column. Slip bobbers with crappie minnows has been really effective, but angles are also catching a lot of crappies pitching jigs and plastics.
