Devils Lake: 12-8-2023

We’ve got ice on Devils Lake and the surrounding area, but the thickness varies. Some shallow bays and smaller lakes have as much as seven inches of ice, but on the main part of the lake there is a lot less ice.

For those looking to get out fishing the western part of Devils Lake froze over first and areas like Pelican Lake and the feeder lakes North of highway 2 have the best ice.

Please use extreme caution when heading out onto the ice and bring the proper safety equipment.

Overall the first ice bite has been pretty good. Walleyes and big jumbo perch are being caught right now. Focus on shallow flats and points in twelve feet fo water or less.

Small spoons paired with a minnow head have been working great, but reactionary baits like the Clam Tikka Mino are also producing fish. The best colors have been Glow, perch, pink, and white.

Set lines with live minnows are also producing walleyes, jumbo perch, and northern pike.

The best bite for walleyes has been during the primetime hours early in the morning and late in the afternoon, but there has been consistent action throughout the day.

Jumbo perch and northern pike can be caught throughout the day.
