Bemidji Lakes Area (MN) Fishing Report – Matt Newell

The Fall bite is on in the Bemidji Area. One of my favorite parts about fishing in the fall is being one of the few boats on the lakes and the bite being very good is a huge plus. I have been targeting walleyes mostly and they have been plentiful. Recently, I have seen some changes in the fish from the early fall patterns to the later patterns we are seeing now.

A week ago, I was finding fish in deep areas; points or deep shoreline breaks in 25 ft. of water all the way down to 40 ft. Jiggin raps were very effective then and still are producing some fish but our larger bites have been coming on minnows, like a creek chub or Redtails on a live bait rig. A jig and a rainbow are also producing fish. I have started to see more fish pushing up a little shallower over the past week.

There are also some fish are on the edges of remaining weeds, and others are off those weed lines or breaks and sliding up shallower as the evening goes on. A rainbow minnow on a firetiger fireball jig has been working great. Dragging or lightly jigging when trolling or drifting at .4 mph has been my go-to. The water temps I have seen are ranging between 54-58 degrees now, which is about a 4-5 degree drop from last week. With the cooler water temps I slowed my presentation down and it’s put more fish in the boat.
