Well it is finally over… Summer that is, but by the way Mother Nature is treating us you would never know it. The past few days we have had the warmest temperatures of the year, and with that the fishing and hunting have felt it too. We have seen a decrease in activity both on the water and in the woods.
Bear hunters especially have seen drastic results this year. First they encounter a drastic cold front hitting on opening day of bear season accompanied by a full moon phase which literally pushed a lot of the bears nocturnal. Now when things are starting to finally turn around we are slammed with the warmest temperatures of the year, again shutting the bear movement down. We may see one very low bear kill this season due to the weather and conditions.
Despite the crazy weather patterns we have still been able to find a few fish. Walleyes, crappies, bass and bluegills have all been available and with some patience and searching we have been able to put some nice fish in the boat. The bluegills and bass have been especially aggressive as they really like the warm temperatures so if you are looking for a tasty fish fry of fresh gills or out targeting acrobatic smallies this is the time to do it.
Musky anglers have been having a rough go of it too with the warm temperatures, but we are seeing a few good fish being caught. We have been running a variety of large bucktails, rubber baits like Bulldawgs and Jerkbaits, which have all been producing.
Have a great week,
Phil Schweik
