Last Ice on Lake of the Woods — HUGE Pike, Burbot & more!

In this article, we’ll be taking a look at an exciting ice fishing adventure on Lake of the Woods. On March 30th, 2017, we headed out to 12-mile reef in search of big Pike. Little did we know that we would also encounter some bonus Burbot and Walleye along the way. It was shaping up to be a fantastic day on the ice.

Chasing Big Pike

Our main target for the day was the elusive Pike. We started off on the west side of the lake, hoping to hook into some trophy-sized fish. As we set up our gear, we made sure to remove the quick strikes to avoid any mishaps. It’s always important to take precautions and ensure the safety of both the fish and ourselves.

A Pod of Burbot

As we dropped our lines, we noticed a large school of Burbot on our fish finder. These bottom-dwelling fish are known for their delicious taste and are perfect for smoking. We couldn’t resist the opportunity to catch a few, so we adjusted our strategy and focused on targeting the Burbot. Using small spoons, we were able to entice the fish and reel them in one by one. It was a lot of fun and added some variety to our day of fishing.

Walleye Surprise

Just when we thought our day couldn’t get any better, we started catching some nice Walleye. These prized game fish are known for their tasty white flesh and are highly sought after by anglers. It was a pleasant surprise to find them mixed in with the Pike and Burbot. We quickly adjusted our tactics and started using different lures to target the Walleye specifically. It didn’t take long before we had a few of these beauties on the ice.

A Busy Day of Fishing

Throughout the day, we were treated to a variety of species. Along with the Pike, Burbot, and Walleye, we also caught some Saugers. It was a true testament to the diversity of Lake of the Woods and the abundance of fish it holds. We marked a big school of Burbot at various depths, ranging from right off the bottom to 15 feet up. This allowed us to target them effectively and have a blast reeling them in.

The Last Ice Adventure

As the day came to a close, we couldn’t help but feel a sense of satisfaction. It had been a successful day of fishing, filled with excitement and plenty of catches. The last ice fishing trip of the season was coming to an end, but we were already looking forward to the next one. We packed up our gear and headed back to the lodge, where we enjoyed some well-deserved burgers and a cold beer. It was the perfect way to end the day and bid farewell to the ice until next December.
