Central Wisconsin Fishing Report – Phil Schweik

by

Hey guys it has been another fantastic week here in central Wisconsin. The fishing has been outstanding and the bear baiting is going very well. Water temperatures have gone up a bit and are now back in the upper 70”s but cooler weather is forecasted for this upcoming weekend and that should send it back down.

The walleye fishing has been very good with very some nice catches of good sized walleyes being caught on the Wisconsin River and Lake Dubay. Right now most of our fish are being caught by using Jigs tipped with crawlers. We are working the jigs in and around submerged structure. We are also catching some nice fish by long line trolling the river channel edges in 7 to 10 feet of water during the early morning hours between 5 and 8 am. Rapala Shad Raps and Storm Hot n Tots have been by far the best baits for us when trolling.

The panfish action has been very good with nice catches of both crappies and bluegills. A lot of the fish are holding tight to deep structure but we are also catching some of the large fish suspended out over deeper water.

We caught a fair number of smallmouth bass and catfish this past week but most of them were picked up incidentally to walleye fishing in deeper water. These are bass and catfish that are holding in 8 to 12 feet of water around rocks, wood, and other submerged structure.

No musky fishing this past week as the water temperatures have again risen into the upper 70 degree range.

Bear baiting is going well and we are getting some nice bears coming in, but pesky raccoons, coyotes and fishers are also visiting our sites regularly and eating up all the bait once the bears open the sites up. Oh well, we will have to come back for them when trapping season opens.

Have a great week,
