Devils Lake (ND) Fishing Report – Mitchell’s Guide Service

by

Walleye fishing has been very good this past week. From the many reports of our MGS guides and visiting anglers, very good may have been an understatement. This big frog pond we call the Devils Lake System continues to produce excellent catches for walleye anglers who are willing to work at unlocking the secrets of this diverse fishery.

As unique as the Devils lake system is, anglers have continued to catch walleyes in shallow, deep and in between depths as they have all summer long. Shore fishing in key areas continues to produce fish for many anglers. Key shore fishing areas are found by bridges and along rip rapped roads. Anglers in boats obviously have more angling options available to them. Main lake fishing has fired up and walleyes can be taken off just about any structural area. Options are virtually unlimited with approximately 220,000 acres of potential fish holding structure to choose from.

For many, trolling crankbaits is a quick way to cover ground and locate schools of walleyes this time of the year. Anglers producing good catches of walleye and pike with crankbaits are using Flicker Shads, Flicker Minnows, Shad Raps and Salmo Hornets. These lures are very popular with the local anglers and our MGS guides. You will find a number of stores well stocked with those crankbaits in the area. Woodland Resorts Pro Shop, Pete’s Bait, Ace Hardware, Economy and Ed’s Bait are just some of the stores stocking crankbaits, tackle, bait and boating supplies. A word of further advice? Unless you like losing lures, steel leaders are a must with all the northern pike we have in The Devils Lake System.

This week the Masters Walleye Circuit comes to Devils Lake and many local anglers are expecting to see good weights. In conclusion, the incredible Devils Lake bite of the Summer of 2016 continues almost unabated. In my opinion, August, September and October will be an even better time to book a fishing trip at Devils Lake. We here at Mitchell’s Guide Service are ready to make such a trip both memorable and productive.
