Lake Vermilion Fishing Report: Walleyes

On the East side of the lake the walleye fishing has remained good. Fish can be found in the eighteen to twenty-five feet of water. Look for fish on sand humps, sand flats, and areas where sand transitions to mud.

Walleyes are being caught on lindy rigs and spinner rigs tipped with leeches or nightcrawler. Go slow around 0.7- 1 mph. Anglers can expect the lead core bite to pick up in the next week or so. Some fish are starting to be caught now.

On the West side of Lake Vermilion walleyes can be caught on swim baits and Rapala Jigging Raps in eight to fifteen feet of water. Look for walleyes on sand flats, rocks reefs, and cabbage weed beds. If the fish are in a more lethargic mood slip bobbers, live bait rigs, and jigs have been producing walleyes in the same areas.

Lake Vermilion Fishing Report: Bass

The smallmouth bass bite has been very good with the hot summer weather that has arrived. Look for bass on points, rock piles, and near shore structure. Most fish can be found in four to ten feet of water.

Smallmouth bass can be caught in a variety of different ways. 1/4-ounce Tubes are working great. The best colors have been green pumpkin and orange. Ned rigs are also working well in the same colors. There is also a decent topwater bite early in the morning and late in the evening on calm days. If the bite gets tough we’ve also had a ton of success swimming marabou hair jigs in a black or brown color.

Lake Vermilion Fishing Report: Panfish

Anywhere you find good cabbage you’ll find nice bluegills. Looking for the real dense leafy patches in that six to ten foot range. Throw a tube or small plastics under a float paired with a chunk of crawler or piece of leech.
