Positioned on the North Dakota and South Dakota boarder Lake Oahe spans over 370,000 acres, making it one of the largest reservoirs in the United States.

A part of the Missouri River system Lake Oahe is a fish factor and is one of the premier walleye fisheries in the country.

When fishing on Lake Oahe you have the opportunity for both quantity and quality.

Structure

Lake Oahe walleyes have a lot of structure to choose from and use. This system has hundreds of points, inside turns, flats, and bays.

One of the best ways to find Lake Oahe walleyes on is to cover water.

A good strategy for catching walleyes on Lake Oahe is to choose a main lake point drill a line of holes from twenty to thirty feet of water. Then fish each hole for couple of minutes or so. If you don’t mark any fish move on to the next point until you do.

If you stay on the move you’ll most likely run into hungry walleyes after a spot or two.

Presentations

Due to the aggressive nature of the Lake Oahe walleyes large minnow profile presentations tend to work best.

The number nine Rapala Jigging Rap and the Clam Tikka Mino in a 7/8-ounce are a couple great options, because you are able to fish them fast covering a lot of water quickly.

They also do a great job mimicking ciscos, perch, and other minnows the walleyes commonly feed on.

The key is to experiment with different jigging cadences and depths until you identify what the walleyes want that particular day.

Tip-ups and set lines are another great way to catch walleyes on Lake Oahe.

Set out a line of tip-ups paired with live minnows in different depth ranges. This will allow you to cover a great area and in return you’ll catch more fish.
