Northern Wisconsin Fishing Report – Jeff Evans

by

Slowly but surely, I’m getting up to speed with the open water fishing season. The rigging of my new Lund 2075 Pro Guide was completed by the gang at Hayward Power Sports last week, and it looks great! That was enough motivation to get out and see what was happening with the crappies on our inland lakes this weekend. Saturday was absolutely gorgeous with sunny skies and temps hitting 70 degrees in the afternoon. Terry Peterson and my dad (Jim) joined me for the maiden voyage of our new office, and by all accounts it was a successful one. We were able to fish two separate lakes, and the pattern was the same in both of them. Pre-spawn fish were holding in 8′ – 10′ of water near weed growth. We’d mark them on our electronics, drop anchor and pick a few off at each stop. A variety of plastics suspended 4′ – 6′ down under a slip bobber was all we needed to catch fish with 10 mph winds drifting our presentations perfectly over the fish. The bite was far from fast, but if you kept moving there were plenty to catch. Sizes ranged from 9″ up to 13″, and it was good to see several year classes which bodes well for the future. Water temperatures ranged from 48 – 52 degrees. Definitely a day well spent with a couple of my favorite guys!

Chequamegon Bay

The smelt run on Chequamegon Bay happened last week and is winding down. It sounds like the guys who got in on it made some big hauls I haven’t had a chance to check it out yet, but there’s been a really hot trolling bite on the bay and around the Apostle islands as well for browns, cohos, lakers, and splake. My friend Damon Schroeder, his son Gayge, and their buddy Drew Mueller spent a nasty day out there trolling stick baits in 5′ – 15′ of water, but the effort was worth it. They landed a bunch of fish including some really good browns in the mid 20 inch range. Water temps were in the mid 30’s. It’s great to see the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, and Gayge is getting after it just like his dad. Nice job fellas!

Our weather looks like it’s going to take a turn for the worse over the next week. Of course it is… I’m just getting started! Our weekly reports will continue throughout the open water season, and we’ll keep you posted on what’s happening on the lakes in northwest Wisconsin. Stay tuned!
