Wisconsin fishing guide Jeff Evans gives his latest Chequamegon Bay fishing report on January 6th, 2024.
Chequamegon Bay Fishing Report: 1-6-24
We’ve got anywhere from five inches to eight inches of ice on the Ashland side of the Bay. Target fish in the weed beds and focus on fishing in twenty feet of water or less on the Ashland side. Set lines are producing the most bites.
The Washburn side of the Bay has ice, but the thickness varies and caution is advised. We are hearing of a pretty solid Chequamegon Bay fishing report. Anglers are catching a nice mixed bag of trout, salmon, and whitefish in about thirty feet of water. Jigging spoons tipped with minnow heads have worked well. Tip-ups are also producing a number of bites. This cold weather will continue to make ice and we should be able to safety fish further out soon. Check the ice as you go if you plan a venturing out.
We will have another Chequamegon Bay fishing report soon as the ice conditions continue to change.
Hayward Wisconsin Area
We’ve got really good ice conditions on our lakes Hayward, Wisconsin area. Most lakes have anywhere from eight to twelve inches of ice. Travel conditions are good and there isn’t much snow on the ice. Ice cleats are recommend.
Northern pike, bass, and a mix of crappies and bluegills can be found in the weed beds. Look for areas with standing green weeds. Tip-ups paired with minnows have worked well for northern pike and bass. The panfish can be caught on small jigs tipped with wax worms.
Some schools of crappies and bluegills can be found in the deeper basins. Target those fish in depths between twenty and thirty feet of water. Small spoons or jigs paired with either livebait or plastics will catch plenty of panfish.
The best walleye bite has been late in the afternoon till about an hour after dark. Spoons are working, but set lines and tip-ups are producing the most bites.
