Heavy Bass Tackle for Musky Fishing Fun

by

Fishing modest-sized lures on heavy bass tackle reduces the physical demands of musky fishing. Anyone can catch fish with properly balanced equipment and tackle.

Technology has revolutionized the world of fishing, and it’s not just limited to electronics and trolling motors. Even the gear we use, such as rods, reels, lines, and leaders, has seen significant advancements. As a musky angler, I have discovered the joy of fishing with lightweight equipment. In this article, I will share my experience with two setups that have brought me immense fun and success in musky fishing.

The Quantum EXO Setup

For my bucktail burning technique, I rely on the Quantum EXO setup. It consists of a 7-foot 10-inch heavy action rod and a 300-sized EXO reel. What sets this setup apart is its lightweight design. The rod provides the perfect length for executing figure eights, while the reel’s big cranking handle ensures a comfortable grip. Not only does this setup make fighting the fish enjoyable, but it also allows me to effortlessly throw presentations like bucktails. Catching fish on this setup is a breeze and way more fun compared to using larger gear for throwing giant plastics.

The Smaller Presentation Setup

In addition to the Quantum EXO setup, I also have another setup specifically designed for smaller presentations. This setup is similar to the previous one but slightly shorter. It also features an EXO rod, but this time I use the Quantum 300 High Nature reel, which has a traditional handle instead of the big cranking handle. This setup is perfect for working with smaller lures like jerkbaits and topwater baits.

Having both handle options is advantageous. The straight retrieve with the traditional handle allows for a fast-paced presentation, while the big cranking handle on the EXO reel is ideal for working jerkbaits. The two paddles on the EXO reel also provide added security, ensuring that even if my hand slips, I can quickly regain control and crank on a big fish.

Choosing the Right Leaders

When it comes to musky fishing, selecting the right leader material is crucial. Depending on the lure I’m using, I opt for two different leader materials.

For bucktailing, I use an 80-pound BMC fluorocarbon leader. This leader material is incredibly strong and can withstand heavy fishing pressure. It works well with any type of spinner, making it a versatile choice for bucktail presentations.

On the other hand, for our jump bait rod, I prefer using titanium leaders. These leaders serve an important function. The simple Albright knot tied to the mainline has no drag in the water, allowing for maximum action of the lure. The narrow diameter of the titanium material further enhances the lure’s movement, making it more enticing to muskies.

Both the fluorocarbon and titanium leaders have their advantages and excel in different situations. By using the appropriate leader material for each presentation, I can maximize my chances of success and entice even the most pressured muskies.
