Wisconsin Buzz Bite Report – Phil Schweik (Central)

It’s a hot one, and with that said we are going to take a break from musky fishing until the water temperatures come back down. High water temperatures and big fish Do Not mix well. With water temperatures above 80 degrees muskies can become very easily stressed out after being fought which can cause irrevocable damage and stress causing them to die. As of today the water temperatures in Central Wisconsin are at 80 + degrees and with the upcoming warm forecast they will only continue to climb.

On the other hand crappie and walleye fishing continue to be very good. We are catching lots of nice fish by targeting break lines in 10 to 15 feet of water. Most of our fish are being caught on jig and minnow combination or jig and crawler combination. Slip drifting has been the best technique for the crappies as they keep moving but with the walleyes you can drop an anchor once you find the school. A lot of the walleyes that we are finding are holding around deep structure. The best advice I can give you is to use your electronics and once you find that submerged wood or weeds in 10 to 15 feet of water set up shop. The fish are going to be there!

We were having a good week musky fishing this past week until the water temperature jumped which caused us to make the decision to stop targeting them until the water temperatures come back down. A lot of our action was on Top water baits and bucktails and even a couple of fish came on rubber down deep. Consistent producers for us this past week were the Fat Bastard from Lake X Lures, and Double 10’s in the bucktails from Baitmaker tackle.

Bear season is only a little over a month away and baiting for bears has started for us here at Hooksetters. We have quite a few locations set up, old and new, and we are looking forward to another great season.

Have a great week,
